Frequently Asked Questions

How long do you spend on the blog per night?
Well, it depends on the post. For a typical post that doesn't require must research, I hammer it out to get something down. Then I work on moving things around, editing things, rewording and reworking things. Typically, start-to-finish it takes probably 45 minutes to an hour to make it what I would consider quality. Then, I always catch something in a re-read.

Do you make money for blogging?
Not primarily. I added Google Adsense a while ago, but I have yet to reach the point where I can even afford a good meal out.

How many hits do you get?
Thanks to you all, I average anywhere from 250-400 hits on a normal day with lower readership on the weekends and holidays.

How long have you been blogging?
I started this particular blog on July 31, 2008. I've been updating almost daily (with help) since June of 2009. It's been a wild ride since!

Prior to this blog, I had another blog called Democratically Speaking. I eventually pulled the plug and moved it to Myspace, but life got in the way. So, I stopped blogging for a while. The biggest move forward in my "blogging career" was to get a laptop. It really has made my life easier. Things I couldn't do with my outdated desktop, I can do easily with the laptop.

Why did you start blogging?
Simple...I like to write! Blogging allows me to exercise my journalistic writing muscles and write about my passion: politics. It's fun for me!

I was on my high school school newspaper staff, and I had great teachers Ben Davis like Janet McKinney, my h.s. newspaper adviser, that pushed me and made me better. When I went to college, I minored in journalism and had great professors like Jack Dvorak at Indiana's Ernie Pyle School of Journalism that also pushed me forward. I also have to think IU English Professors Tony Ardizzone and Stephen Watt for teaching me so much about writing when I took their classes.

I am a product of our public education system, and I'm proud to teach in public schools today!

How do you get started with a blog?
You just have to do it.  Find something you're passionate about, and you just start writing.  I never ever thought anyone would start reading this let alone politicians asking me what I think on issues and things.

If you're writing good things, and people start to like what you write, you will build an audience, and people will start paying attention to your blog.

Why don't you run for office yourself?
I did, and I reserve the right to try again.

What do you think of Republicans or people that disagree with you?
The more the merrier!  The boat's no fun if it's not rocking a little bit, right?  I am lucky to have good friends of all political ilks.  I have people that are extraordinarily conservative and others that are as far left as you can be.  I love to argue, and, as long as you are respectful with me, I'm going to treat you in the same manner.  I get criticized sometimes for being too nice with people and in my rhetoric here, but that's ok.  I have to sleep at night.

What's this JohnnyStir Show thing?
Well, I was contacted by to do a one-hour radio show.  I initially declined, but I thought about it and decided I would give it a try.  I really enjoyed the show.  Radio talk shows are so important, and I absolutely love the medium.  I remain grateful for the opportunity to have done this internet thing.  Unfortunately, I ended the show on July 28 to concentrate on other things.  It was a great ride though.

Finally, a political website that isn't screaming at the other side. We need more (Democratic) centrists in government!
